Sustainability

Our dedication to sustainability encompasses our venue and extends to our suppliers.

By collaborating with partners who share our vision, we integrate sustainable practices into every possible aspect of our show.

Here's how some of our key partners contribute to the mission. Each partnership ensures that sustainability is a fundemental element of our entire process, from sourcing materials to executing events:

NEC Birmingham

What we do:

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our events through practical, measurable actions:

  • Reducing waste: We carefully manage food orders to minimise waste, with any surplus composted where possible.
  • Digital-first approach: Our event app helps reduce printed materials by providing event information, exhibitor promotions, networking opportunities, and carpool coordination.
  • Reuse and recycling: Stage decorations are stored and reused across events, with dedicated recycling points available onsite.
  • Lower-carbon travel: Attendee travel and accommodation data helps us assess event emissions and guide carbon reduction and offsetting initiatives.
  • Cutting single-use plastics: We have replaced individual speaker water bottles with reusable glass bottles and recyclable cups.
  • Sustainable print materials: Any printed guides and marketing materials use FSC-certified paper, while compostable packaging materials are used wherever possible

Our Venue:

Our venue partner, the NEC, has an established sustainability programme focused on reducing waste, conserving resources, and improving energy efficiency.

Waste & Resource Management
  • Maintains an average 80% recycling rate.
  • Food waste is composted and converted into energy and fertiliser.
  • Surplus materials and food are donated to local communities and charities.
  • Water refill stations are available throughout the venue to reduce single-use plastic consumption.
Sustainable Food & Packaging
  • Up to 80% of food and beverage suppliers are sourced within 30 miles of the venue.
  • Sustainable, recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable packaging is prioritised.
  • AI technology is used to reduce food waste and improve stock management.
Energy & Water Efficiency
  • Smart meters, LED lighting, motion sensors, and energy-efficient escalators help reduce energy consumption.
  • Water-saving technologies, including efficient taps and urinals, minimise water usage.
  • Exterior lighting is automatically adjusted to prevent unnecessary energy waste.

Our Suppliers:

We work with suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability and continuously improve their environmental performance.

  • Paperless operations: Digital ordering, e-commerce platforms, and event apps reduce paper usage.
  • Recyclable materials: Graphics and display materials are designed to be fully recyclable.
  • Furniture reuse: Furniture is refurbished, repurposed, and reused wherever possible.
  • Certified sustainable timber: Wood products are sourced through FSC-certified supply chains.
  • Reduced transport emissions: Suppliers consolidate deliveries, optimise logistics, and invest in cleaner vehicle fleets.
  • Lower-energy production: Partners use energy-efficient technologies including LED lighting, laser projection, and upgraded workshop systems.
  • Plastic reduction: Single-use plastics are being eliminated in favour of recyclable, biodegradable, and lower-impact alternatives.
  • Waste minimisation: Damaged materials are repurposed into new products, reducing landfill waste and maximising resource efficiency.
